    1. Spring Writing Class: True North: Crafting the First-Person Voice in Memoir
      7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Join us for a Memoir Workshop with August Tarrier!

“A fiction writer has no reason to lie. A memoirist has an illusion to protect.” – John Dufresne

In this workshop we’ll tap into your stories-in-waiting and help you find ways to craft memorable and original prose and plumb the depths of your experience in order to find your own voice and unique material. As we practice the art of self-inquiry, expect that your creative spirit will be sparked via plenty of in-class writing exercises and discussion of some classic personal essays. The workshop will help you manage the vagaries of memory, how to signal to readers that your story is “true,” how to create vivid characters and dialogue, how to build dramatic tension, how to turn your life’s challenges into inspiration, and how to use the elements of fiction like scene and plot to craft non-fiction.

August Tarrier is a manuscript consultant and editor. She leads writing workshops in memoir, fiction, and editing. August has taught creative writing at Villanova University, Temple University, the University of Baltimore, and the Camden High School for the Creative Arts. She has won several national awards for her short stories, including the Zoetrope annual short fiction award and is currently at work on a novel.

This course is designed to accommodate poets at all levels of accomplishment. The ABCs (assonance, blank verse, caesura) of poetry will be addressed, as well as the basics: What is a good beginning, ending and title for a poem, and how should a poem look on the page? Contemporary American and international poets from A.R. Ammons to Adam Zagajewski will be discussed. Narrative, persona, political, lyric and confessional poetry (among others) will be covered with a particular focus on what makes poets’ voice and style their own. 2. Spring Writing Class: Recipes and Family Stories
      2:00 pm – 3:30 pm

Jon us for our Spring Writing Class: Recipes and Family Stories with Kathleen Sheeder Bonanno!

Preserving family recipes is one way of preserving culture. In this class we will not only share our recipes, we will share the stories that accompany them. Was this peach cobbler a favorite of nephew John? Whatever happened to him? Did you learn the recipe from your grandmother? Where did she grow up? Using some of the same techniques used in memoir writing – like sensory detail. We will write short tales to accompany every recipe. Each participant will leave class with 5 copies of a simple 12-page chapbook of his or her very own recipes and family stories. And on the last day of class, we’ll have a pot-luck lunch featuring our favorites!

Access to a computer at home is helpful but not necessary. The instructor will type up handwritten copies of recipes and stories if necessary. GREAT CLASS FOR SENIOR CITIZENS!

Kathleen Sheeder Bonanno, Director of Musehouse, founded the organization in 2011 after being awarded a Knight Foundation Challenge Grant. She has been an educator for eighteen years. Her book, Slamming Open the Door, was among the ten best-selling books of poetry in America in 2009. Bonanno has been twice nominated for Pushcart Prizes for her poetry, has been interviewed on NPR’s Fresh Air, and has had her book reviewed favorably in The New York Times. In 2008, Bonanno was awarded a Women of Courage/Women of Inspiration Award by Lutheran Settlement House for her anti-violence advocacy.

    3. Spring Writing Class: Food and Wine Writing Workshop with Sam Gugino
      4:00 pm – 5:30 pm

Join us for a Food and Wine Writing Workshop with Sam Gugino!

To convey the textures of food accurately and concisely you need passion, certainly, but also some basics of journalism. This class will take you through the foundations of food and wine writing, whether for reviews, essays, articles, or books. You’ll learn how to find the right angle for a story, how to write an enticing lead, and how to structure an article so it holds together and flows easily. As you master these journalistic techniques, you’ll also develop your own voice. We’ll also cover the nuts and bolts of the business of writing, like where to market your work, how to pitch a story, and how to ask for money. There will be reading assignments and an opportunity for students to write a food and a wine article, both of which will be critiqued in class by the group.

Sam Gugino ran two critically successful restaurants before becoming restaurant critic for The Philadelphia Daily News in 1986. He was food editor at the San Jose Mercury News, where his columns were named best-in-the-nation by the Association of Food Journalists. He wrote four books, including Cooking to Beat the Clock, named one of the top ten cookbooks of 1999, by Amazon.com. Sam has written for The New York Times and was nominated for a James Beard Journalism Award in 1997, and has been a contributing editor at Wine Spectator magazine since 1996.

MOSAIC is Movement of Oppressed Sectors Working in Concert
A Call to Action by Maroon Shoatz

At present, there are sectarian divisions due to racial, ethnic, gender, sexual orientation, cultural and geographical differences that hinder individuals, organizations and entire communities who already interact, cooperate to various degrees share many of the same concerns, and are faced with similar obstacles to their well-being. But we can all come together like a MOSAIC and move toward creating positive changes in our collective well-being.

The MOSAIC will not be an effort directed toward imposing any type of multi-racial, multi-ethnic, gender neutral or conformist utopian universalism. No! The MOSAIC will allow individuals, organizations, entire communities, and whole peoples to exercise Self Determination in deciding what types of social orders they choose to struggle to bring into being, while at the same time learning how to better come together with others to form societies that will be superior to the ones in which we now live. Thus, the word mosaic fits us in many ways. We will add to the dictionary definition by defining ourselves as The MOSAIC: The Movement of Oppressed Sectors Acting in Concert.

The MOSAIC– An ideological jumping off point that will serve all of our separate and
collective interests; it can be termed Inter-Communal Self Determination.
      Inter: Existing between
Communal: 1. of or relating to a community,
      2. Characterized by collective ownership and use of property
      3. Participation in, shared, or used in common by members
      of a group or community
Self Determination: 1. Free choice of one’s acts or states without external
      compulsion;
      2. Determination by the people of a territorial unit of their
      own future political status

Our MOSAIC would consist of elements from amongst individuals, groups and
communities- some of whom are already benefiting from interacting and working together- with room for expansion.
They include, but are not limited to:
      •Women—individuals and groups
•New Afrikan and Pan Afrikan peoples
      •Puerto Ricans
      •Anarchists and Anti- Authoritarians
      •Asians
      •Chicano Mexicano Indigenous
      •Native Americans
•Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Genderqueer and Transgender
      •Euro-Americans
      •Ecological Activists
      •Animal Rights Activists
      •Working Class Peoples
      •People with dis/abilities

Our political posture would include- but not be limited by the following:
      •Pro- Self Determination for everyone
      •Anti-Economic, political and cultural domination
•Pro- Gender and sexual choice freedom and inclusivity
•Anti-Racism, gender, cast and class oppression
•Pro- Full Human Rights for everyone
      •Anti-Capitalism
      •Pro-Sustainable economics
•Anti- Entropic environmental, species and technological practices
      •Pro- Species and environmental projections

The MOSAIC will be built on the principals of seeking to recruit both from amongst the most oppressed segments, and from amongst the most selfless. The former found primarily within the ranks of the lower class females, people of color and the GLBTQ peoples, while the selfless are found, to a lesser degree, amongst all segments.

The MOSAIC must immediately begin to spread its messages by recruiting people who are willing to help by producing publications of all sorts, as well as utilizing any and all other means that do not transgress its principles, to aggressively push it’s messages under the MOSAIC title.

All MOSAIC people can contribute to this effort autonomously, while always keeping in mind our collective stance, as well as the sensibilities of other MOSAIC and oppressed peoples.

Finally, The MOSAIC must immediately begin a dialogue directed toward building a consensus- as near as possible- about how to best further coordinate our collective efforts.

    3. The Master’s Muse reading with Varley O’Connor
      7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Varley O’Connor’s fourth novel (Scribner, May 2012) is based on the life of George Balanchine’s fifth wife, a star ballerina whose career was cut short when she contracted polio at age twenty-six.

In 1956, hours after performing with the New York City Ballet, Tanaquil Le Clercq fell gravely ill, awaking from a feverous sleep to find that she could no longer move her legs. Set against the backdrop of creative New York of the 1960s and 70s, The Master’s Muse tells the remarkable true story of two artistic legends whose profound love and complicated relationship forever changed American cultural history.

This reading is part of the Writers and the Process Series hosted by Minter Krotzer. It will be followed by a Q&A and wine and cheese reception.

      VARLEY O’CONNOR

(with a wine and cheese reception)

“What a rare pleasure to be introduced to Tanaquil Le Clercq through The Master’s Muse. I was enchanted from the first page by Varley O’Connor’s graceful portrait of this remarkable woman. How privileged we readers are to have the life in all of its strength and intelligence and elegance. Le Clercq is rendered without fuss or ornament, in a manner wholly at one with the beauty she and Balanchine strove for in their art.”
      – Paul Harding, author of the Pulitzer Prize winning novel, Tinkers

Varley O’Connor’s fourth novel, The Master’s Muse, is based on the life of George Balanchine’s fifth wife, a star ballerina whose career was cut short when she contracted polio at age twenty-six.

      About Varley:
Varley O’Connor’s first novel, Like China, described by the New York Times as “a first novel that soars,” was published by William Morrow in 1991. Her second novel, A Company of Three, about the world of theater and acting, came out from Algonquin Books in 2003. Her third novel, The Cure, was published by the Bellevue Literary Press in 2007. She has taught writing and literature at Irvine, Hofstra University, Brooklyn College, Marymount Manhattan College, the North Carolina Writers’ Network, and thrice for the Squaw Valley Community of Writers’ Summer Conference.

The Writer and the Process series is a reading series hosted by local writer and creative writing teacher, Minter Krotzer. It is designed to illuminate the creative writing process for both writers and readers, and also to inspire and encourage new writers as they seek community. For more than three decades, Eva Gabrielsson and Stieg Larsson—author of the internationally bestselling “Millenium” trilogy of Swedish crime thrillers that began with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo—were inseparable. Famous only in death, Larsson was a fervent feminist, activist, and journalist who portrayed right-wing extremism and insidious neo-Nazi movement in Sweden. In There Are Things I Want You to Know, Gabrielsson lays out the parallels and gaps between the literary narratives of Larsson’s three books and the violent modern-day Sweden that few people knew about and Larsson railed against, all while telling their love story and her stifling anguish after his death.

In conversation with John Timpane, staff writer, The Philadelphia Inquirer

A self-avowed “fermentation fetishist,” author and activist Sandor Katz (aka Sandor Kraut) travels the world spreading the gospel of foods that are transformed and ennobled by bacteria, heralding the benefits of the ancient preservation technique that he says makes foods much more digestible and nutritious. “Eating bacteria is one of life’s great pleasures,” he says. “Beer, wine, cheese, bread, cured meats, coffee, chocolate: Our best-loved foods are almost all fermented.” Katz is a long-term HIV/AIDS survivor who considers fermented foods to be an important element of his healing. His two books on the topic—Wild Fermentation and The Revolution Will Not Be Microwaved—have become manifestos and how-to manuals for a generation of grassroots food activists. In The Art of Fermentation, he offers practical information about nurturing and preparing live-culture foods.

Jesmyn Ward surprised the literary world when she won the 2011 National Book Award for her second novel, Salvage the Bones, a “strikingly beautiful, taut, relentless and, by its end, indelible” book (San Francisco Chronicle) that follows a pregnant teenage girl and her family in the Mississippi coastal backwoods in the days leading up to Hurricane Katrina and the immediate aftermath of the storm. A Professor of Creative Writing at the University of South Alabama, Ward received her MFA from the University of Michigan and was a Stegner Fellow at Stanford University. Her debut novel, Where the Line Bleeds, was an Essence Magazine Book Club selection and the recipient of a Black Caucus of the American Library Association Honor Award.

“A devastating novel about love, hope, delusion, and the intricate ways in which time’s passage raises us up even as it grinds us down,” wrote Michael Cunningham of Matrimony, Joshua Henkin’s 2008 New York Times Notable Book of the Year. The Director of the MFA program in Fiction Writing at Brooklyn College, Henkin is also the author of Swimming Across the Hudson, a Los Angeles Times Notable Book. His short stories have been published in numerous publications, including Ploughshares, The Yale Review, and Boulevard. His new novel, The World Without You follows one family during a July 4th holiday weekend in the Berkshires a year after the youngest sibling, an intrepid journalist, was killed on assignment in Iraq.
